Game 1 vs CASS : W 34 - 27
A solid start to another campaign. Fortunately or us the opposition was as rusty if not more, than us, and that ensured a tight game. Scoring was proving to be difficult with both teams unable to find their range. It was the strong offensive rebounding of Mark and Jezza that proved crucial thoughout the game. (Joint top scorers i think). At halftime the scores were tied at 13-13.
Lack of match fitness was our first hurdle, but once we got into the game the strategy to post up on the smaller fwds worked effectively. A number of easy fast break baskets, including a sizzling no looker by Adrian to Tien, ensured we were able to hang on until the end. Although we still struggle at free throws, it was left to Mark and Tien to ice the win.
We got off to a nervous start, but improved at the end. Luckily there were not too many embarrassing moments this time, although there were a few rejections (read: no-calls) inside the paint.
QB's matched us in the first half, their star players slicing up our boy-to-girl defence. Referees gave us a hard time, we were up to 8 fouls within the first 15 minutes. As usual Big Shaz 32 took us apart with her passing and cutting into the lane. Emz, their number 11 also pulled a few nice moves and hitsome jump shots (I think I'm in love.)
Lost a few rebounds? at least we didn't lose any jump balls. We won't be able to get away with that against other guys.
After we switched to zone defence in the second half, things got much better, although by that time the girls were tiring and we ran away with it to a comfortable win. We managed to hold the QB's to a low score. Last season they scored 47 on us.
Top scorer, Sam? with 22 points I think, although he needed some encouragement from the sidelines, >quotes have been censored due to their explicit nature<
Good points
We managed to focus through the entire game
Fitness has improved
Ming is good at free throws (although the rest of us are still struggling)
Our guys stepped up when we needed. Ming, Pat, Tien, Ed and Sam all made key contributions.
Bad points
Couldn't work the man to man defence (but we're better in a zone anyway)
Not much cohesion in offence, most of our points came off offensive rebounds and fast breaks.
I don't think we hit ANY shots from outside. (Chris with the air ball from three)
Missed many lay-ins due to pressure from the girls
Three second violations (Jamee will learn eventually?)
Things to work on
Guys should work on a 'go-to move' that each person can rely on to score. For example, Samson's low post move and Ming's slash in off the wing.
Against passing teams like the QB's we need to block off their runs. Just stop them from cutting into the lane. This will break up the fluency in their teamwork.
Need to be more aggressive in rebounding and lay-ins. QB's tiny guard managed to get an offensive rebound off us?
SMD played with 4 men with 15 minutes remaining in the game.. but we had their measure even before their no.7 received his 5th foul... The first half started off well with some clutch baskets and good finishing on the breaks.. but SMD came back with too many uncontested lay-ups as we began to tire... Both teams traded baskets in the back end of the half.. until captain Ming drew the foul and made the tough lay-in for the last play of the game (though I think he missed the extra point after the buzzer)...
Halftime: 23 - 19..
We came out flat after the break.. and SMD capitalised.. they may have even grabbed the lead for a few seconds... but thanks to a treble of 3-pointers by Mark.. the Woks regained the lead and the momentum... We were fully aware of no.7's foul count (ie. 4).. and managed to foul him out early in the half.. and with no one else on the bench, they struggled... Once Sam and Ed started getting the rebounds, they didn't really have an answer...
Some other moments of note:
Pat slipping over a wet patch on the far-side of the court.. Scary moment.. Lucky he didn't fall on his shoulder...
Ed Ho powering down some huge boards.. Ended up scoring the team's final 4 points...
SMD somehow got 2 pts after hitting 1 of 2 freethrows...
A fair result against a 4 man Seraph team... We scored a tonne of points in transition.. and defence was solid when it was needed (albeit against 4 players)... Great to see Pat back in action...
Last year we built our campaign on defensive resilience. There is no doubt that this trend will continue. However there are three major factors that will affect our performance at the start of the season.
1) Team work
We fall ASLEEP guys. Don't stand around, set screens for each other. Forwards cut to the basket or fight for a position down low, whatever you do don't just stand around. Talk to each other all the time, on the court, on the bench.
Remember to be confident on the court. If you make a mistake forget about it, keep fighting.
Guys on the bench think about the game and call timeouts and subs, think about how to beat the opposition and talk to each other.
2) Fatigue
Substitutions. Whether we have numbers or not subs will decrease the fatigue factor. Plus it ensures that every stays warmed up for the whole game and decreases hot and cold streaks.
Of course Jezza the Duracell bunny is allowed to stay on for the whole game if he can hack it...
3) Free throws
We draw them but can't hit them. We are a side that plays best when attacking the hoop.
Practise your free throws; put them up nice and soft so that it has a chance to bounce in.
Plays: We established what we are good at last season.
1) Slash and pass/shoot
Exactly what it says. Get the ball out on the wing and cut to the hoop.
That means Minga and whoever else is confident. Jezza Geoff!!!
Forwards look out for the pass and the lay-in.
2) Get the ball down low to Samson
'Nuff said
3) Guards, shoot the frickin rock
Don't think about it. If you are free, shoot it. No conscience.
Mark, take the three.
Be agressive, rebound, hustle! C'mon Woks lets do it!
A close finish in the season closer for what has been a great run for the Wokboyz.
After MVPs Samson and Ming have been carrying the team all season, point guard Raymond stepped up to shoulder the scoring burden against division leaders TBIS. The Man of the Match for the Wokboyz attacked the defence of the favourites, scoring ten points and out hustling the bigger opposition for some big offensive rebounds.
With the Wokboyz short on numbers and in height, our only two big men Sam and Jezza played almost the whole game without rest. Against a team with very good fundamental skills, our twin towers came up with some great defence leading to many rejections. Eddie Tai again was a constant presence for the team despite playing with several 'pirate inflicted' injuries.
We took our time on offence, coming up with solid shots. We even managed to sink a few free throws as the opposition got into early foul trouble. The game went down to the final seconds, with the Wokboyz just being outclassed in the final minute, with a tough lay-up breaking our resistance.
Although we eventually went down to the division leaders (31-34), there was plenty to take out of the last few weeks of our season. Teamwork has skyrocketed, while individual skills and confidence are improving. We've established our reputation as defensive specialists and many teams will be more fearful of us at the start of the next season.
Special mention should go to Team Manager/Cheerleader Mandy for her continued support and assistance throughout a long and arduous season.
In the meantime, the Wokboyz should stay in 'team-mode' and try to get together for some games. This should be a great time to catch up with a bit of ball with our "injury listed" and recently engaged/married team-mates. Lets keep up the spirit and get ready for a great new season in 2003!
Another tough game against KS.. and another tough win against KS... As is the case in most games, we started off well, with a whole bunch of transition baskets on the back of some nifty steals... Ming and Ray in particular were doing a mountain of work early on, by getting the steals, then finishing off the fast breaks in style... Woks cruising at 16-4...
As expected, the collapse came midway through the first half... We allowed too many offensive rebounds.. and turned the ball over too many times... The heads went down as KS went on a 12-4 run leading up to halftime... HT: 20-16...
In the 2nd half, the lead stayed at around 8 to 10 points for the most part... It was good to see some long range shots on target, whilst preventing KS's streaky shooters from getting open looks at the basket... However, free throw shooting problems reared its ugly head again.. and we shoulda/coulda won by a whole lot more...
The last 3 minutes of the game weren't without its tense moments, as KS fought back to 2 points, but to our credit, we held our composure to win by 4... Final Score: 37-33...
After our game on Court 1, there was news that the Queen Beez had beaten Seraph by 12 points next door on Court 2...

Game 13 vs Queen Beez : W 59 - 47 (L 47 - 59 for Chris)
Let's just get straight into the highlights (read: lowlights)...
Highlight #1: Wingman, MW, gets the ball on the left.. He fakes left and slashes inside (ala Vince Carter style).. He pulls up for the jumper inside the paint, only to be rejected by their no.9.. The ball ends up near the halfway line...
Highlight #2: Fastbreak situation.. Sam, on the fly, receives the ball midcourt.. As he turns towards the basket, he is met by their little (but plucky) no.13.. A huge collision, and amidst all the screaming, Sam politely grabs her around.. umm.. the waist.. averting a potential dangerous situation and some more screaming... And this all happened right in front of Mandy...
Highlight #3: QBz's no.32 (the wo-man-mountain) with some trickery on Ray.. Crossovers, behind the back, you name it... She follows it up with a 3-pter a few minutes later...
Highlight #4: Jezza losing a jump-ball to a chick...
Highlight #5: The last play of the first half.. Pike tries to intercept an inbound pass.. but fails... No.32 ain't too happy with the body contact (wtf?), and faces up to him... Pike runs away...
Apparently, there was a game played.. Early lead: 20-6... HT: 32-25... FT: 59-47... Winning streak extended to 5...
